I am 53 years old, and until yesterday, I had never heard the term "highpointer". As we learned when we reached the top of Maryland's highest mountain, a "highpointer" is a person who explores the highest point in each state. There is a whole organization devoted to "highpointers". There are memberships, a board of directors, books, maps and websites all devoted to "Highppointers". I spent the evening deciding which state is going to be our next "highpoint adventure".
We took a little late afternoon day hike on Saturday to check out Maryland's Highpoint, which is located in southern Garrett County. The hike looked easy on google earth, but the climb was a little tougher than I expected. We followed the old rocky logging road up the mountain and followed the signs that any idiot could have easily followed. The bear, the deer and the snakes must have known we were coming cuz they stayed out of our way. It took about 45 minutes to climb the 6 or 7 hundred vertical feet, but it was well worth the trip.
At the top, the view was amazing. It was a cool, sunny afternoon and you could see for miles. The picnic table came in handy as rest was much needed before we began our descent. We signed the visitor's book, grabbed our "Highpointers Certificate" and headed back down. It was a great afternoon and this will not be our last "Highpoint Adventure".
